Fine and fresh food sector boosted by trade fair Tavola

Fine and fresh food sector boosted by trade fair Tavola

A great edition. This is no exaggeration: both exhibitors and organization have spared neither effort nor trouble to turn Tavola 2016 into a memorable edition. From March 13 to 16, its 18th edition was held at Kortrijk Xpo. Whereas it all started in 1982 with 40 exhibitors on an area of less than 1 hall, 24 years later, Tavola has definitely grown to be a European must visit fair in the field of fine and fresh food.
The beautiful stands, the warm welcome for the visitors by the exhibitors, the overall decoration, the strictly professional character, etc. It was nice to spend some time in the fine and fresh food industry in the past three days.

Among the 420 exhibitors we count 60% Belgian and 40% foreign companies. They come from 11 different countries including several regional and country pavilions. The striking French pavilion ‘Business France’, the village Gourmet ‘Eiland voor fijnproevers’ [Foodies Island], Apaq-W’s group stand under the motto ‘lekker Waals’ [Walloon and delicious], representation from UK through ‘Delicious Britain’ and ‘Produced in Kent’ and finally the Hungarian delegation via ‘Hungarian national trading house’.
The national and international firms clearly see Tavola as an ideal platform for launching their products in Europe.

The same pattern can clearly be seen in the visitors: from the 16,470 professional visitors (Sunday: 7,185 – Monday: 5,201 – Tuesday: 4,084), 78% were Belgian and 22% were foreign visitors from 30 countries.

Today’s consumers have also and especially in terms of food become true world citizens & this international trend becomes clearer and clearer at Tavola as well. Especially in the specialization of the fair – high-end food products -, each ‘nation’ proudly presents their finest culinary treasures. The joint offer unquestionable elevates Tavola to an even higher level!

New flavours, surprising product combinations, original consumption moments, etc., anything that has to do with innovation on the plate or in the glass makes the consumers curious. The Golden Tavola competition awards the best innovations in the food industry and helps determine what will be on the consumer’s plate tomorrow.

Food finds its way to our plates via various channels. The criteria for innovation are different depending on the channel within which the product is sold. A supermarket uses other criteria than for example a deli or catering company. The Golden Tavola takes this into account and divides the competition into 4 different categories:

  • Golden Tavola Retail (products offered in self-service) – winner: Paul’s Meat Veal Bacon Sopraco
  • Golden Tavola Traiteur (product sold with traditional service) – winner: Piccalilli – R&D Food Revolution
  • Golden Tavola Foodservice (products offered through catering companies) – winner: Cocktail Foam – R&D Food Revolution
  • Golden Tavola Delicatessen (products exclusively offered in delis) – winner: Shrubs by Ediks – Bleuzé Interfood

The awards by the expert jury were announced before the start of the trade fair. However, the final word was reserved for Tavola’s visitors. During the fair, they chose BelOrta’s Flower Sprouts® as the winner of the audience award.

Flower Sprouts® are a cross between Brussels sprouts and kale. The green-purple mini cabbages have curly leaves and a crunchy bite. They have a softer flavour than traditional sprouts and a frivolous appearance.

One of the visitors summarizes his visit to Tavola as follows:

Compared with other international fairs, Tavola is a human-sized fair. In just one day I bumped into numerous discoveries and new products. Moreover, I was able to visit Tavola in a very pleasant atmosphere where it is clear that all exhibitors make very great efforts to create beautiful stands. The exhibitors were all excited and I was able to experience the passion they have for their products. It was my first, but certainly not my last visit.”
